Why should I leave a review when buying a book?

Updated: Apr 8

Leaving a review on a book is simply a nice thing to do. It can be beneficial for both the author and other readers. Reviews provide social proof that the book is good or worth reading. If a book has many positive reviews, it is more likely to attract additional readers to the book. Additionally, reviews can help authors improve the authors writing by providing feedback on what worked well and what could be improved.

If you enjoyed reading a book, leaving a review is a great way to show your appreciation to the author. It can also help other readers decide whether to or not, to read the book.

On the other hand, if you didn’t enjoy the book, leaving a neutral review can be helpful as well. Constructive criticism can help authors improve their writing and provide valuable feedback to other readers.

Overall, leaving a review on a book can be a great way to support authors and help other readers discover new books.

What does a book review contain?

When writing a book review, it is important to include a few key elements. Most book reviews are less than 1,000 words long, with the sweet spot hitting somewhere around the 500-word mark. In addition, all reviews share some universal elements, these include:

  1. A concise plot summary of the book.

  2. An evaluation of the work.

  3. A recommendation for the audience.

If these are the basic ingredients that make up a book review, it’s the tone and style with which the book reviewer writes that brings the extra panache. This will differ from platform to platform, of course. For instance, a book review on Goodreads will be much more informal and personal than a book review on Kirkus Reviews, as it caters to a different audience.

Can I leave a spoiler in the book review?

It’s best to avoid including spoilers in your book review. While some readers may not mind spoilers, others may prefer to read the book without knowing what happens. If you do include spoilers, it’s important to mark them as such and give readers the option to skip over them.

Overall, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid including spoilers in your review unless you’re sure that your audience is okay with them.

If you have read one of my books, then I would thank you from the bottom of my heart if you found time to post a review on Goodreads or Amazon, or your favorite book site.

Thank you for reading this blog note.
