How to Retire: A Journey to New Beginnings

Updated: Oct 7, 2025

A Life-Changing Encounter in Chemainus

Last Thursday in Chemainus, something remarkable happened in our little shop. A man burst through the door with such urgency that I thought something might be wrong. Before I could even ask, he grabbed my hand, shaking it vigorously while loudly proclaiming, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

After managing to free my hand from his enthusiastic grip, I asked why on earth he was so grateful. His answer left me astonished. He explained that just a month earlier, he had purchased my new book, How to Retire, from my wife. He said, “It changed our lives.”

The Impact of a Single Book

Naturally, I wanted to hear more. He told me he had read the book in a single day, and his wife devoured it the very next. What they discovered gave them the courage to take steps they had only ever dreamed of.

Then he dropped the news that nearly made me fall over. “We are moving to Portugal,” he said.

“What?” I exclaimed, almost certain I had misheard him.

“Yes,” he continued with a grin. “We called the consulate, and they are providing us with a bonus of $60,000 for moving there, and a selection of cities to choose from. We’ve picked one, found a beautiful four-bedroom, four-bathroom refurbished home, for only $187,000. We’ve already placed a deposit, and our house here is up for sale.”

Embracing Change: A New Adventure Awaits

I was completely floored. Over the years, I’ve moved more than 20 times, including across the world, so I know the upheaval and excitement that comes with it. But for this couple, who had never made such a big move before, this was nothing short of life-changing. And all of it began with one book.

Moments like this remind me why I wrote How to Retire in the first place. Retirement doesn’t have to mean sitting still, worrying about money, or feeling stuck. It can mean adventure, opportunity, and renewal. For some, that might be moving overseas. For others, it might mean simplifying life at home, finding new ways to stretch a pension, or discovering passions they never had time for before.

The Power of Inspiration

The man in Chemainus reminded me that sometimes, all it takes is the right spark at the right time. A book can be that spark. If you’re wondering what your retirement could look like—or if you’ve ever dreamed of living somewhere more affordable, more inspiring, or simply different, then perhaps How to Retire can be that spark for you too.

Taking the First Step

You can pick up a copy here in Chemainus or order it directly through my website Steven Scanlan. Because retirement isn’t an ending. It’s a new chapter. And sometimes, the first step is as simple as turning the page.

Exploring New Horizons

Retirement offers a unique opportunity to explore new horizons. Many people find themselves at a crossroads, wondering what to do next. This period can be a time of self-discovery and adventure.

Finding Your Passion

One of the most rewarding aspects of retirement is the chance to pursue passions that were set aside during the busy years of work. Whether it’s painting, gardening, or traveling, this is the time to embrace what you love.

Financial Freedom

Financial considerations are often a significant concern during retirement. Understanding how to manage your finances effectively can lead to a more fulfilling experience. By exploring various options, such as relocating to a more affordable area, you can stretch your pension further.

Building New Connections

Retirement is also an excellent time to build new connections. Engaging with community groups or clubs can lead to friendships that enrich your life. Sharing experiences with like-minded individuals can provide support and inspiration.

Conclusion: Your Retirement Journey Awaits

In conclusion, retirement is not just an end; it’s a new beginning filled with possibilities. The story of the man in Chemainus is a testament to the transformative power of taking bold steps. If you’re ready to explore what retirement can mean for you, consider picking up How to Retire. Your adventure awaits!
