Writer · Vancouver Island

Notes from a restless mind.

I write books, plays, journalism and the occasional piece that refuses to behave as expected.

I was born in Britain and now live on Vancouver Island. The distance has altered the view, although not necessarily the opinions.

On the desk

Stories, arguments and useful trouble

My work ranges from children's books and practical non-fiction to travel writing, stage plays and novels. They are different forms, but they begin in much the same place: something catches my attention and will not leave quietly.

Current work

Nine published books, an 82,000-word middle-grade adventure, more plays under development, and an expanding collection of essays.

Writing is not one occupation

Some days I am following a lost queen through an adventure. On others I am examining retirement, travelling through Japan, arguing with public policy or wondering why a comedy audience laughed when I did not.

I also created AuthorsDrop, writing and publishing software built from the practical frustrations of getting a manuscript from an idea to a finished book.

More about me
