AI, Good or Bad?

steven10521

Hey everyone!

Let me start by saying that writing is not my life. I have a fantastic role at a national company and love working with the fantastic teams I have been allowed to work with. Writing is my passion. That said, this blog is about the mix of my two loves, work and writing. If you take the time to read this article, I would love you to leave a comment or send me an email with your thoughts on this subject as it is a serious interest of mine.

Just got back from a whirlwind trip across the country, from my island home on Vancouver Island to the bustling streets of Richmond Hill, Ontario (just north of Toronto). The reason for the journey? Our company's epic National Conference!

This year's theme? The fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We had a jam-packed agenda filled with presentations from industry leaders and colleagues, all diving deep into the exciting possibilities and thought-provoking challenges that AI presents. By the end, our 400-strong team walked away with a much clearer picture of AI's potential to revolutionize our lives.

AI might sound like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but it's actually been around since 2017. Since then, it's become a hot topic, with both promise and peril swirling around it. Now, we're finally starting to see this futuristic tech become a reality in our everyday lives.

Benefits: A Brighter Future Powered by AI

Imagine a world where work, home, and even space exploration are transformed by intelligent machines! That's the future AI promises. Companies like Google and Apple are pouring billions into developing these tools, and the impact will be undeniable.

Think Siri, the ever-helpful assistant on your iPhone. Used by millions worldwide, Siri is just a glimpse of what's to come. This handy tool helps us make decisions, discover new things, and stay on top of our schedules. Need to know if you need an umbrella? Siri's got you covered. Want to catch the game tonight? Siri can tell you the time. It's a powerful example of how AI can seamlessly integrate into our lives.

But the real game-changer came in 2022 with the rise of Deep Learning (DL). This cutting-edge technology allows AI to process information in a whole new way, enabling it to reason (not perfectly, mind you) and even mimic the human brain!

Deep Learning: Powering Personalized Experiences

Deep Learning is what makes those targeted ads on Google feel eerily specific. It goes beyond simply showing you what they think you might want, and instead tailors things to your unique needs and interests. It analyzes billions of searches and transactions to predict what might pique your curiosity, essentially showing you exactly what you're looking for.

The benefits extend far beyond online shopping. Deep Learning is already making waves in various industries:

  • Agriculture: Predicting crop yields and identifying plant diseases to help farmers optimize their harvests.

  • Insurance: Analyzing car accident damage to streamline repairs and cost estimations.

  • Medicine: Assisting doctors in diagnosing illnesses by pinpointing crucial details in medical scans.

The applications are endless, with Deep Learning rapidly transforming sectors like finance, retail, healthcare, and more. AI and Deep Learning hold immense potential to improve our world. But with great power comes great responsibility, right? So, what are the potential downsides of embracing AI?

AI and the Looming Job Shift: Are We Ready?

The arrival of any groundbreaking technology brings both sunshine and shadows. Take the car, for instance. Today, it's an essential part of life, but its introduction wasn't a smooth ride. Back in the horse-drawn carriage era (pre-1886), a vast industry thrived around these majestic creatures. Hay farmers, stable hands, and wheelwrights, all played crucial roles in keeping society mobile.

Then came the car, and over three decades, it reshaped the world of work. While countless jobs in the horse-related industries vanished, new opportunities emerged. Car manufacturers, traffic light specialists, and oil rig workers, these roles, often well-paying and offering more free time, became the new reality.

This historical shift mirrors the concerns surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning. Experts predict a future where 40% of jobs won't disappear entirely but will transform drastically. Just like the wagon maker couldn't envision himself working in a gas station, we might struggle to imagine our future careers in an AI-powered world.

The unknown can be scary. What happens when AI takes over my job? The answer, honestly, is we don't know for sure? But here's the exciting part: we can learn and adapt. Unlike the 30+ year transition period with the car, AI is moving at breakneck speed. Jobs across various sectors, truck drivers, cleaners, even doctors and journalists could see significant changes in the next 2-7 years.

Predicting the specifics is akin to writing a future novel. The plot unfolds as we go. But one thing is certain: the AI revolution is here to stay. Just like the genie can't be put back in the bottle, we can't stop progress. The key lies in embracing the change, acquiring new skills, and preparing ourselves for a future brimming with possibilities. The question isn't "Will my job change?" but rather, "How can I adapt and thrive in a world powered by AI?"

The coming months and years will be a period of immense learning and discovery. Let's approach it with a spirit of curiosity and a willingness to embrace the unknown. After all, the future of work might be brighter than we ever imagined.

How do you think AI will impact us? Do you think it will change your work?
