Why should I read?

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

Reading offers a multitude of benefits that enrich our lives in various ways. Whether you are new to reading or are a longtime reader of any genre, you will benefit by reading a wider selection of books.

Reading is a primary source of acquiring knowledge. Whether through books, articles, or online resources, reading exposes us to new information, ideas, and perspectives, expanding our understanding of the world. Reading engages the brain, stimulating cognitive functions such as comprehension, critical thinking, and problem-solving. It keeps the mind active and sharp, helping to prevent cognitive decline.

Regular reading will also enhance your vocabulary and language proficiency. Exposure to diverse language patterns and words improves communication skills, both written and verbal. Reading also transports us to different worlds, situations, and eras. It sparks imagination and encourages creativity as we visualize settings, characters, and scenarios in our minds.

Reading exposes us to different cultures, lifestyles, and viewpoints. This broadens our perspective and fosters empathy, helping us better understand and relate to others. Engaging with a good book can be escapism, providing a break from daily stressors. It offers a sense of relaxation and mental rejuvenation.

Readers can share their favourite books, encourage others to read them, and share the experience of the journey. Some of my favourite books include:

Scythe, by Neal Shusterman - The story of a dystopian world where people cannot die but can still

have children. How does the population deal with the increasing number of people? They use Scythes, sanctioned people to undertake the reduction in killing.

Pyramids, by Terry Pratchett - The seventh book from Terry Pratchett's discworld series and a

delightfully funny story of a prince in an ancient land who does not want to take power. with pyramids, camels and a girl called PTraci this book is a favourite.

day in the life of a Russian prisoner in the prison in the stalags. Based on Solzhenitsyn's own experiences, it is a story of hope against adversity. Highly recommended as a story of joy over adversity, and an insight into how Russia treats its prisoners.

Whether it's fiction, non-fiction, or poetry, reading is a source of entertainment and enjoyment. It provides a range of emotions, from laughter to introspection. Reading self-help and motivational books can inspire personal growth and self-improvement. They offer insights into overcoming challenges, setting goals, and developing positive habits.

Reading exposes us to different cultures, histories, and traditions, fostering cultural awareness and respect for diversity. Strong reading skills are essential for academic success. They empower students to comprehend complex subjects, perform well in exams, and excel in their studies.

Reading involves the retention of characters, plotlines, and details. This enhances memory skills and cognitive functions related to recall. The act of reading can be a shared experience, leading to discussions and connections with others who have read the same book. Book clubs and reading groups foster social interaction.

Reading also encourages analytical thinking as we interpret themes, character motivations, and plot developments. This skill can extend beyond books to problem-solving in various contexts.

Reading prompts introspection and self-discovery. Characters' experiences and struggles can resonate with our own lives, helping us reflect on our values and goals.

Reading is a lifelong hobby that adapts to different life stages and circumstances. It offers a sense of continuity and personal fulfillment.

In essence, reading is not only a means of acquiring information but a transformative activity that shapes our intellect, emotions, and perspectives. It enhances our personal growth, empathy, and understanding of the world, making it an essential component of a well-rounded and enriched life.
